May 1, 2020We’ve all experienced the effects of a poor kitchen design – in fact, this may be the reason you’re currently planning a kitchen remodel project. Whether you’ve found yourself unable to open drawers in a family member’s kitchen or ridiculously short on storage in your current space, the time to address potential kitchen design problems is during the planning stage.
We’ve compiled a list of some of the most common kitchen design mistakes to avoid during this critical planning time, as well as a way to address each.
Common Kitchen Remodel Mistakes
While you’re designing your upcoming kitchen remodel, be sure to avoid these mistakes:
- Wasted corner space. Depending on the layout you choose, your kitchen cabinets will almost inevitably have at least one corner. While the deep cabinet space created at these junctures is nearly always difficult to reach under in the best of circumstances, you can make things easier on yourself by installing a lazy Susan or pull out shelving option.
- Dysfunctional corners. While you’re trying to eliminate wasted space, keep in mind that appliance doors and cabinet drawers and doors need a certain amount of clearance to function properly. Avoid placing appliances at the corners and ensure drawers and doors don’t conflict with one another.

- Overly tight walkways. A cramped kitchen doesn’t always indicate a kitchen with a tiny footprint; even the largest kitchens in terms of floor space can feel cramped if you don’t leave enough walking space between cabinets, islands, and appliances. Plan for at least 36 inches at minimum, though most experts recommend 42 inches for single-cook and 48 for two-cook kitchens; adjust any islands or peninsulas accordingly.
- Underutilized islands and peninsulas. These features can provide you with tons of extra counter, storage, and eating space, but only if you use them wisely. Avoid too-deep islands with wasted, unreachable space in the middle, and make sure to include sufficient overhang if you plan to be able to pull up a seat.
- Limited landing space. Prep space is crucial to designing a true chef’s kitchen. However, you must include adequate landing space on either side of your range, refrigerator and sink. You’ll want to include at least 15 inches on both sides of these areas so you have a place for items you’re transferring into any of the above.
- Storage space shortcomings. Whether you have a dish collection, a large number of small appliances, or a huge spice assortment, you’ll need adequate cabinet space to store it all. Do your best to itemize your kitchen storage needs and plan spaces specific to each item’s use.
When you’re planning your kitchen remodel, it’s crucial to consult with the experts. Your contractor has encountered each of the issues on this list and then some. Before you finalize your design, ask for input regarding any red flags before the construction process begins.
